St. John’s Students and Alumni, Staff and
Friends Pound the Pavement to Support Breast Cancer
Research
They started out before the sun was up, and by 6:30 a.m. they
had raised the St. John’s tent on Queens Boulevard.
More than 600 students and staff, alumni and friends raised in
excess of $17,000 for research by marching in the annual
Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday, October 16, 2005.
They began their trek at St. John's Queens campus and walked
more than a mile to Borough Hall, where they erected the first tent
among the various community organizations participating in the
event.
Student Government members built an arch of multicolored
balloons over the St. John’s tent. The St. John’s Pep Band, Dance
Team, and cheerleaders provided music and encouragement to the
marchers, including Dr. Andre McKenzie, Vice President for Academic
Support Services; Dr. Frank Le Veness, Professor of Government and
Politics; Donna Bordo, of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health
Professions; and dozens of other members of the St. John’s
community.
St. John’s participation in the annual Strides Against Breast
Cancer Walk is just one of the many ways that the University lives
its Vincentian mission of excellence and service.
