St. John's University was the site of an Antique Car Show sponsored
by the Jamaica Estates Association, the Union Turnpike Merchants
Association and the Greater New York Region of the Antique
Automobile Club of America. Over 150 antique cars rolled onto the
parking lot next to Belson Soccer Stadium and Carnesecca Arena to
be admired and discussed.
There was a great diversity of rare automobiles, including American
classics like the Ford Model A, Hudson, Packard, 1950’s Cadillacs
and Chevys as well as rare imports like the Austin-Healey Sprite,
Volvo 1800 and Rolls Royce Phantom. There were plenty of classic
American sports and muscle cars, including Corvettes, Mustangs,
GTO’s and Camaros from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Even a few newer
performance cars snuck into the show, including a new Mustang GT,
Grand Prix GTP, Corvette Z06 and Honda Civic Si. Hundreds of
people of all ages came to the show to enjoy the cars and talk
about their automobile hobby.
As this was a community project, the University’s Office of
Community Relations was involved with the coordinating plans so
that a portion of the admission proceeds would benefit the Queens
Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Hillcrest
Branch of the Queens Borough Public Library.
