Grants and Sponsored Research
The Office of Grants and Sponsored Research (OGSR) represents the Pre-award administration office at St. John’s University. We provide service and support related to research activities across all schools and units at the University and work closely with the Office of Business Affairs regarding post-award items such as the financial management of sponsored projects. Sponsored programs include research, instruction and training, public service, evaluative testing, and other scholarly and creative activities conducted under the direction of University faculty and staff and funded by organizations external to the University in accordance with award regulations.
The Office also consults with the Office of General Counsel, Biosafety, and the IRB on items relating to the conduct of a sponsored project. We also coordinate with the Office of Institutional Advancement regarding proposals to foundations and corporate sponsors and we provide support for the University's commercial activities.
We work with colleagues across the University to identify funding opportunities and where appropriate we bring together interdisciplinary research groups with common interests. We also provide guidance and training in applying for grants.
We provide advice on how to interpret sponsor guidelines, develop budgets, and to ensure compliance with University and sponsor requirements. Our office is responsible for coordination of the submission of sponsored project proposals on behalf of the University.
Policy and Regulation
OGSR reports to the Office of the Provost and we work to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, such as institutional policy and procedures for the protection of human subjects, conflict of interest and misconduct in science, and supporting the University’s obligations under its Assurance covering the use of animals in research, along with other requirements imposed by federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
Training and Service
We provide researchers with services specific to the pre-award process including Federal update sessions, training on funding sources and the proposal submission process.
Together with the Office of Business Affairs we provide post-award financial administration and assistance.

Monday - Thursday: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Closed Fridays during the summer months.
